On the Joy of Writing at Great Speed

October 9, 2002

November is nearly here, and with it comes National Novel Writing Month, NaNoWriMo. This is a yearly event. People—normal people, just like yourself—sign themselves up to write novels of 50,000 words during the month of November. It's a significant and self-improving task, like training for a marathon but requiring much less time and physical exertion.

Each year more people join and more novels are written: last year 5000 people signed up and 700 reported finishing on time. This year the NaNoWriMo website will provide a word-count verification and send an electronic award to the winners. Quality doesn't count, so you can feel free to ramble at heart's content. The point is to tackle a huge challenge and enjoy the worldwide camraderie of others doing the same.

For more information, visit the NaNoWriMo website at www.nanowrimo.org. If you sign up, let us know (nanowrimo@inkburns.com) and we'll commiserate with you through November and celebrate with you on December 1.
